Dotson Company melts with two 8,000 pound coreless induction furnaces. That is to say that we use electricity to melt and the resulting iron is much cleaner and better to convert to ductile iron than with other melt processes.

A 1,500 pound ladle of iron is "tapped" or started every seven minutes. The rythm of tapping a ladle every seven minutes is the heartbeat of our operation.

Ductile Iron is made by a process of conversion. The beginning base metal has a structure of flake graphite. A controlled explosion using magnesium converts the flat graphite flakes to spherodial balls. These spheroids or nodular balls greatly enhance the strength properties of the iron. more...
